FLIGHT
93 MEMORIAL TORCH OF LIBERTY
Fabricated by retired
Somerset blacksmith and artist, David Weimer, the Memorial Torch
of Liberty was unveiled at the Chapel in November, 2002, and
dedicated as the gift of the Families of Flight 93 to the Memorial Chapel
on the Third Anniversary, September 11, 2003.
Original background research for the Torch began in October and
November, 2001, with extensive communication with the National Holocaust
Memorial, Washington, D.C., and manufacturers of Laser beams and Halogen
and Argon electric beams. Gas
as a light source was dangerous, limited, and expensive, and the laser
beam, by far the most desirable, is practically unfeasible and financially
prohibitive. Communications
with a supplier of commercial search beams from New Jersey were conducted
through December of 2001. That
company ultimately became one of the primary participants in the
production of the Tribute of Light displayed March 11, 2002 at the New
York Trade Center site in New York.
After their first Flight
93 Memorial Tribute Concert at the Chapel, the North Star Kids, a singing
troupe of young singers and performers from Pittsburgh, under the
direction of Annie Snyder adopted the Torch as a special project.
At each of their public performances in Pittsburgh and suburbs,
collections were taken up to “help light the Memorial Torch at
Shanksville.” Their
enthusiasm and dedication has resulted in more than 4,000 dollars being
raised toward the estimated cost of 10,500 dollars for the half billion
candlepower beam that will eventually cap the Torch.
Tests conducted at the Chapel by a local Pennsylvania supplier,
Windswept Promotions, demonstrated that the beam can be seen as far away
as 25 miles in all directions. Lighting
the Torch Project is special to the North Star Kids, and through them, it
has become special to many children who have participated in the Project
by gifts and donations of their own and from their families.
It is now the objective to dedicate formally the Memorial Torch
this Anniversary in September and to have the light installed for lighting
and dedication on the evening of Saturday, September 10th. The North Star Kids are scheduled for a special Dedication
Concert and performance.
In addition, a billboard
will be located along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which passes about two
miles south of the Chapel. The
billboard will identify the Torch Beam as a Tribute to Flight 93 and the
freedom and liberty defended by their heroic sacrifice at Shanksville.
Additional funds to complete the project must come from donations
from the public. To date,
more than one thousand contributors have donated to the project. Gifts small and large have contributed to the present grand
total. After the initial
acquisition of the lamp, electric costs, maintenance, and billboard
maintenance will be sustained by any funds received over and above the
initial 10,500 dollars.
A special dedication
booklet is being planned, including the names of all contributors.
The booklet will be sent to all who contribute ten dollars or more
to Light the Torch of Liberty Project.
Donors of 25 dollars or more will receive a booklet and a
certificate attesting to participation in the Torch Project.
Contributors of $100.00 dollars or more will receive the
certificate, the dedication booklet, and a special plaque installed at the
Chapel will display engraved plates of all those who contribute one
hundred dollars or more.
The beam will shine into
the night sky of Shanksville to remind all who see it that this is
Shanksville, the place of Heroes, and will be an inspiration and joy for
all who have made it possible. Your
participation is invited. Thank
you.

MEMORIAL
TORCH OF LIBERTY FORMAL DEDICATION – NOVEMBER 11, 2002
Representative
Bob Bastian unveiled for Flight 93 Memorial Chapel an outdoor metal sculpture,
Memorial Torch of Liberty honoring the memory of the Heroes of Flight 93 at
ceremonies on Veterans' Day, Monday, November Eleventh, 2002.
Master Blacksmith, David Weimer of Somerset, Pennsylvania is the
commissioned artist. Wrought of Titanium stainless steel and sheet metal, the 6
foot cylindrical spiraled pillar is installed on a six foot pyramidal base. The
surmounting Torch approximates the torch held by the Statue of Liberty.
The
four spiraled ribbons represent the four planes of September 11, 2001.
Together, they represent all the innocents who perished that day.
The
source or the beam of light will be a brilliant stationary parallel beam 250
million candlepower Halogen spotlight installed in the framework of the torch
and will be seen twenty-five miles in all directions.
A billboard to be installed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike three miles to
the south of the Chapel will identify the night beam in honor of the memory of
the Heroes of Flight 93 at Shanksville. The
Memorial Torch of Liberty is the gift of the Families of Flight 93 and was
presented and dedicated September 10, 2003 by Christine Fraser, representing the
Families of Flight 93. The Memorial Torch of Liberty is incomplete without the
great powerful light beam extending its symbolic testimony beyond the immediate
environment of the Memorial Chapel. The final steps to completion can only
be accomplished with the support and participation of those who choose to help
create the final Torch through individual pride and willingness to contribute
one-by-one, joining together with many others to make the Torch their own.
The Memorial Torch
Project is an opportunity for individuals to reach beyond the limits of what
one person can do alone and to join with others to accomplish together something
noble in which all
can take pride.
